I am Joyce Rheal founder of Cedar Breeze Holistic Pet Care. I deal with the whole aspect of the animal – including training, pet care, pet sitting, pet transportation, pet care workshops including preparing pets for emergencies and disasters. Our first priority is the health and well-being of your beloved animal companions
I had my first pet when I was six who was Shorty, a white beagle. Since then my life and my home as been filled with animals ranging from the wild to domestic to farm animals. Dogs in my home ranged from beagles, border collies, German Shepherds, golden retrievers, huskies, Carolina Dog, lab, and various mixes.
My family recognized and encouraged a unique talent of working with and understanding animals which leads to my unique and deep connection to animals.
My experience includes six years of animals rescue with the Wetzel County Animal Rescue in New Martinsville, WV, a no-kill animal rescue organization including animal rescue, canine training, and cat and canine adoptions. This started 30 plus years as a dog handler and trainer. For two years I became part of a wolf rescue organization as a volunteer in caring for wolves that have been in domestic settings that needed a safe place when their domestic homes did not work out. I continue to be active in wolf/wildlife education and preservation. I was active with Paw Above Pet Sitting Services in Colorado Springs, Colorado and with Paw Pal Pet Sitting Services in Carterville, Illinois.
I am a Nationally Certified Pet Care Consultant including Caring for Senior Dogs based in Southern Illinois. I have completed the FEMA Animals in Disasters certification. I am the author of Preparing Your Pets for Emergencies and Disasters for sale on Kindle and in a PDF format and of Disaster Plan: Preparing Your Pets for Emergencies and Disasters.
It is my mission, a lifestyle commitment, and my philosophy is to provide a holistic approach to pet care that is completely Force-Free – this includes no choke, no shock, no pain, no fear, no physical force, no physical molding, no compulsion based methods will be use to train or care for any pet.
I seriously push for educating the community and pet owners on the use of holistic force-free training and pet care. Joyce is also active with Southern Illinois Against Breed Specific Laws and believes in addressing the behavior over the specific breed of the dog.
The “healthspan” of an animal is not just about tacking on years, it’s about living a long and healthy life. 33 percent of pet owners say healthspan is their top concern for their fur babies. And we at Cedar Breeze Consultants agree.
After the pet food recall in 2007, I started to wonder where that food was being made and what ingredients were going into their dog’s food and treats. In 2009 I was having problems keeping them healthy on the foods that had been eating. Our veterinarian strongly recommended I change the food that Trojan and Gitli eat. To make matters worse, Trojan, a Carolina Dog, is picky about what he would eat. He did not like the raw meat and home cooking dog food or going raw just was not practical for me, it took too much time and money.
A turning point came in 2010 when one of the foods the veterinarian recommend went on recall, Now what was I suppose to feed the dogs. I took several months looking for a dog food for Trojan and Gitli that had not been recalled and did not have toxins like BPA, preservatives, or antibiotics from feedlot or CAFO meat. Finally I met someone who recommended that I check this online pet food comparison tool that showed how the dry dog food we used compared to a pet super-food called, Life’s Abundance. Not only was Life’s Abundance less expensive, it offered advanced nutrition including pre and pro-biotics and antioxidants.
I had not heard of Life’s Abundance even though the company has been around for 14 years. Perhaps I didn’t know about it because the products are not sold in big-box stores or maybe it was because the company name changed in 2011 from HealthyPetNet. But I felt confident ordering the food online because of the “Safe Shopper Guarantee.”
When the first box arrived, Gitli tried to open the box before I could and Trojan was helping. I’d never seen them do that before and they only do that when the food arrives. And I reviewed lots of dog foods before making this switch.
Within seven weeks their weight and body figure started to show improvement normalized and they had a shinier coat. And the best part was I knew they were thriving on good nutrition from US ingredients.
I have seen their holistic nutrition clear up allergies, hot spots, and adjust weight problems. Holistic, natural products often costs less than you pay for premium brand pet products and certainly cost less than the long-term health care expenses caused by many manufactured products.
